365HANGERS tête-à-tête with Marie of The Curvy Fashionista
1. When and why did you begin blogging?
I have always known I wanted to start a blog – it just took me forever – well, a few months to dive in! Actually, I’d created an account and it sat there for, like, almost two months before I began! While I was in school, I realized that I had all these resources that I used and shared with my clients at that time, and I knew that if it was this hard for me and my clients, that it would be hard for someone else – so I jumped in!
2. How does it feel being a plus-size fashion blogger? Have you faced any adversity in the blogging industry because of your body shape? If so, how did you handle it?
You know what, at times, especially when I first began, blogging was a hobby and an outlet. But when things became real (especially after losing my job), I took the blog by the reins and forged ahead. It is quite liberating and and a welcomed challenge to work for myself! Everyday is a new and different day and there is never a dull moment! I feel quite fortunate to be working my passion!
As far as adversity, I look at these occurrences as opportunities! I know that the resistance is fear of the unknown and I also like to look at the glass as half full. If someone does not get nor wish to welcome plus size fashion, then I go where I am wanted. I create my own path by sharing with the internet that there are fashionable options, there are designers who cater [to plus-size], and that there are women who do not mind spending a pretty penny to fashion her curves. I also feel that with the advent of social media, we are in a beautiful space that brings people closer and unites us with a resonant voice to demand more!
3. What is your favorite thing about being a fashion blogger?
Two things! One: the freedom to express myself, and two: knowing that I have helped or inspired someone to step out her her own box to embrace fashion and its vast world of expression! Nothing feels better than when I receive an email, DM on Twitter, or Facebook message thanking me for helping them! It feels good to know that I was able to touch some! I know it sounds corny, but honestly, this is how I feel!
4. Has fashion always been a big part of your life? Was there a “defining moment” in your life where you realized that you could dress fashionably even though you’re not a size 2?
Looking back, there were quite a few times where I was like – “Marie, what were you thinking?” I think freedom of expression, my rebellious ways as a child and teen (notice the contradiction), have shaped my outlook on fashion and life! I was always the girly girl (even though I had my bout of baseball), and I had always been drawn to clothes. I had worked in retail from the age of 16 till now! So… YES! Even at the times where I got it wrong in my head!
I think what shaped my mentality was growing up in a household and family where being healthy was stressed – not your size. My mother was in the military, so we always ate, had a great relationship with food, and were always kept active. My nanna was a solid 14/16 and still is a looker (crosses my finger for her gene pool) and her own self acceptance in her curves helped me accept and embrace my own curves as I got older!
5. What advice to you have to women struggling with being comfortable with their body, and wondering how to dress according to their body shape?
Honestly, I feel that you should never let your curves define your style, but your style should define your curves. I also feel that these “rules” of what a plus size woman should NOT wear are rubbish!
While there are certain fashion do’s – the greatest thing a woman can wear is confidence. Your body is no mistake and you are who you are for a reason.
6. Tell us about your shopping habits. Where do you shop? Do you tend to spend more money on certain pieces of your wardrobe?
Ooohhh. Well, my name is Marie, and I am a shop-a-holic.
I shop at a variety of locations! Online mostly, as I love supporting indie designers and wearing pieces that can easily be worn 5+ ways. I am always on the hunt to find newness, so I cannot pin my habits down to a t, just yet! From Target to Saks and all in between, I shop based on my mood!
I tend to spend more on jeans, basically my basics and classics! Sample sale sites have become the bane of my existence. Baiting me with exclusive deals and astonishing deals… *sigh*
7. What are your summer staples?
Maxi dresses in natural fabrics! It gets really hot out here and I need something easy, that can breathe, and that gives me a bit of style versatility!
