Cracking the Wedding Dress-Code

Trying to decipher the dress codes from wedding invitations can be a nightmare! Although it doesn’t seem like rocket science, the majority of the wedding goers are confused with what to wear. Not to worry! With a few guidelines in the right direction, wedding fashion disasters can be avoided altogether.

First and foremost, the wedding invitation itself will give you ample clues for decoding this puzzle. Pay attention to details such as the time of the wedding, the venue the event will take place and what the invitation looks like. A cute sundress might not be a great idea for a formal wedding invitation but might work for a colorful handwritten save-the-date.

Day or evening weddings dictate quite different dress codes regardless of if it’s a formal or an informal wedding. If the wedding takes place in a church, a modest dress code is essential. If there is a distinct color theme running through the invitation, it’s wise to avoid the color altogether. You don’t want to be mistaken for one of the bridesmaids.

Black Tie Weddings
Women: Traditionally, black tie events are the most formal wedding event, requiring females to don long gowns with all the glamour and glitz. However, ‘black tieweddings today have a bit more leeway so dressy mid calf or knee length cocktail dresses are fine. Accessorize appropriately and remember: a cocktail dress is every bit as glamorous as a long evening gown. Those preferring pants can opt for a semi formal pant suit.

Men: Gentlemen can wear a black or dark colored tuxedo (ie navy blue) or a black bow tie. To mix it up, men with dates can coordinate their colors with their date’s gown.

  Semi Formal weddings
Women:Can anything be more vague than a ‘semi-formal’ dress code? Semi formal weddings are generally less strict compared to formal weddings. A tip to make this easier is to consider the time of the event. If the wedding is before 3pm, in other words a daytime event, go for a short knee-length light colored dress or skirt and blouse. For evening events, a modest knee length cocktail dress with pumps will be perfect. Just ensure it’s not white as this privilege is reserved for the bride. Semi formal cocktail dresses are generally simpler as compared to a black tie cocktail dress.

Men: A collared shirt with slacks will be fine. For evening events, just add a tie to the ensemble.

Casual Weddings
Before you rejoice thinking ‘anything goes’ in a casual wedding, casual dress code actually means ‘business casual’ or ‘smart casual.’

Women:A summer sundress or a blouse with skirt or pants will be fine.

Men: Dress pants with button down shirt or polo.

When in doubt, just ask. It’s too risky to try to channel your inner sixth sense and read the bride and groom’s mind through an invitation card. Trust me; they will be happy to tell you what to wear when given the chance!

Sarah C:
I never ever wear white! The only way you do that is if you want the bride to kill you, I always try to match a little of the wedding colors with my dress, not too much though.
ShaniB:
I always keep the hair simple with soft flowing curls which work for all weddings outdoor or inside and a LBD (little black dress). I take the risk with a little black dress and bright colored heels. Good way to stand out at a wedding without out showing the bride
Ella P.:
"Simplicity is beauty". I like to wear something simple, less is more, :) I want to make sure the color of the dress would compliment well my skin tone. One more thing, I like to wear my hair down for a feminine look :)

Don't take "casual" too far, and never wear a mini skirt. This seems like it would go without saying but I have seen far too many girls in inappropriate attire at weddings.
